Rob Gwynn, UK Policy and Public Affairs Manager “Becoming comfortably uncomfortable”

By Volta Trucks

Rob Gwynn joined the company as a Policy and Public Affairs Manager for the UK, where he manages our engagements with political stakeholders, including government departments, national and local politicians, and policymakers to ensure that Volta Truck’s views are communicated and advocated for. In this blog post, Rob reflects on his time at Volta Trucks so far.

In your own words, what does Volta Trucks mean to you?

Volta Trucks, to me, means to be progressive – in our thinking, in our product, and how we work to offer a solution that will revolutionise and achieve our aims of making cities centre logistics safer and more sustainable.

Why did you choose to join Volta Trucks?

Having worked previously for a logistics operator in the e-commerce sector I could see how important it was to improve how sustainable and efficient the operations could be. The product of an electric truck, designed as the Volta Zero has been, offered a solution now that would be fit for purpose for the future. To then be able to be a part of that from the inside was too appealing to pass up.

How was your first week at Volta Trucks?

Brilliant. My manager, having given considerable thought to the role, set out the priorities and what was required of me in our first-morning meeting. This enabled me to get on with my job from the very beginning, feeling like I was contributing and adding value. This, and the onboarding meeting with all the other new starters really made me feel welcome.

What makes you feel good about the work you do?

Knowing that it contributes to our success and feeds into the larger picture that we are all contributing to.

Why do you care if Volta Trucks reach its mission of making our cities safer and more sustainable?

I care because it affects my life, my family’s lives and everyone else’s life. Reducing emissions from transport is a huge step in achieving the carbon reduction that we need to ensure the climate temperature rise is kept as close to 1.5 degrees as possible to reduce the irreversible damage that we are doing to our planet.

What’s one lesson your job has taught you that you think everyone should learn at some point in their life?

Being comfortably uncomfortable is not a bad thing. The key is managing that and having the right structure around you to help you do so.

How do you think the work you’re doing at Volta Trucks will help shape the way you want the world to look?

The streets of our urban environments will be quieter, safer, and cleaner, yet still retain all the services, amenities, and infrastructure that we all want to be able to live, work and play in our towns and cities.

What would your dream EV be?

Volvo V90 estate.
