Volta Trucks has today confirmed that Restore Datashred, one of the UK’s market-leading shredding services suppliers, has joined its Pioneer Programme and will test the Volta Zero – the first purpose-built full-electric large commercial vehicle – in H1-2021.
Restore Datashred specialise in the safe disposal of confidential business paperwork through a nationwide network of specialised shredding centres with an annual shredding capacity of 100,000 tonnes. Those centres are today served by 160 commercial vehicles, with a mixed fleet of HGV’s, LGV’s and vans, and includes a fleet of Shred-Tech MDX-3 mobile shredding trucks. The Restore Datashred fleet of 160 vehicles drives a combined 3.5million miles a year, with a fossil fuel consumption of more than 120,000 litres per month. With one of the key company objectives to reduce its impact on the environment, the Volta Zero will be the first electric vehicle to be evaluated by Restore Datashred on its fleet, helping the company deliver a zero carbon footprint over the coming years.
Announcing the Pioneer Programme membership and forthcoming trial, Restore Datashred’s Head of Fleet, Ian Walsh, commented;
“Now is a great time to be ‘going electric’, given current market rates for fuel vs. electricity. I’m delighted to work with Volta Trucks on this project to help us step into the future. Their ability to offer us such environmentally sound vehicles makes feasible our desire to become carbon neutral in the near future. The process of taking our fleet over to electric will happen more quickly and smoothly, we believe, by partnering with Volta Trucks. We will be offering our customers the same service but with improved green credentials and more cost efficiency for us.”
Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, Rob Fowler, continued;
“Restore Datashred joining our Pioneer Programme and trailing the Volta Zero represents the sixth customer announcement we’ve made in just three months, and shows the momentum of the company and the very high levels of interest within commercial fleet operators to electrify their fleet of vehicles. Everything that you see, touch, buy, or even shred, in a city centre, where air quality is at its worst, has been delivered by a commercial vehicle. At Volta Trucks, we want to ensure that all of that commercial activity can take place sustainably, with the minimum environmental impact. The Volta Zero is the solution that makes it possible.”

Editor’s notes.
About the Volta Zero.
The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built full-electric 16-tonne vehicle designed for inner-city freight deliveries, reducing the environmental impact of freight deliveries in city centres. Designed from the ground up with an operating pure-electric range of 150 – 200 kms (95 – 125 miles), the Volta Zero will eliminate an estimated 180,000 tonnes of CO 2 by 2025.
Safety is also at the heart of Volta Trucks, with its ambition of being the safest large commercial vehicle manufacturer. The Volta Zero was designed for electric from the outset, which facilitates a step-change in vehicle and pedestrian safety. Thanks to the removal of the internal combustion engine, the operator of a Volta Zero sits in a central driving position, with a much lower seat height than a conventional truck. This combination, plus a glass house-style cab design, gives the driver a wide 220-degrees of visibility, minimising dangerous blind spots.
The first prototype Volta Zero was launched in September 2020, with the first pilot test vehicles due to start evaluation with customers in Q3-2021.
