Volta Trucks and Siemens partner to accelerate commercial fleet electrification

By Duncan Forrester

Volta Trucks and Siemens intend to jointly deliver eMobility charging infrastructure to Volta Trucks’ customers.

Partnership aims to support customers to simplify and accelerate their migration to commercial fleet electrification.

Agreement looks to see state-of-the-art electrification – from charging solutions to facility infrastructure – available to Volta Trucks’ customers from the start of deliveries in all launch markets.

Volta Trucks, the leading and disruptive full-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer and services provider, and Siemens Smart Infrastructure, the leader in electrification, have signed a letter of intent, outlining a cooperation to deliver comprehensive eMobility charging infrastructure and software to Volta Trucks customers, to simplify, de-risk, and accelerate their transition to commercial fleet electrification.

The partnership looks to bring together Volta Trucks’ unique solution to commercial vehicle fleet electrification and operational expertise through its Truck as a Service offer and Siemens’ global experience in electric vehicle support solutions. This includes software control systems, facility electrification, charging infrastructure, energy management, building equipment and project finance. The partnership will seek to support Volta Trucks’ customers by providing infrastructure for full electrification aligned with their operational needs.

The technical infrastructure of the charging installations for Volta Trucks’ Truck as a Service customers would be overseen by Siemens to deliver a best-in-class solution. This includes the hardware and software required to operate the charging and power distribution infrastructure for fleets of Volta Zeros. Volta Trucks’ customers could also achieve higher uptime with minimum expenditure, through Siemens’ performance management platform. This optimization approach is powered by advanced analytical and simulation models and considers factors such as fleet duty cycles, charging times, battery life, optimal utilization and costs, and asset management.

The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built, full-electric 16-tonne commercial vehicle designed for urban distribution, and to deliver safer and more sustainable cities. The truck has uniquely been designed from the ground-up as a full electric vehicle. Its zero-tailpipe emission electric drivetrain is the enabler to an innovative, safety-first approach to cabin design, providing unrivalled visibility for its driver, and enhances safety for other road users, making it the perfect vehicle to operate within city centre environments.

“Through our partnership with Volta Trucks, we intend to co-create Transportation as a Service solutions, and deliver Volta Trucks’ customers higher uptime, a commitment to reliability through performance-based contracts, and reduced energy expenditure. As commercial fleets look to meet sustainability goals and deliver cost effective, robust infrastructure solutions, we are pleased to be able to partner with Volta Trucks.”

said Thomas Kiessling, Chief Technology Officer of Siemens Smart Infrastructure.

“I am delighted that Volta Trucks will be working with Siemens to bring industry-leading charging infrastructure solutions for our Truck as a Service customers”,

continued Essa Al-Saleh, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks.

“To deliver the electrification of urban logistics at pace and scale, we need operationally efficient electrification infrastructure aligned to the exact requirement of each fleet. In Siemens, we have a world-class partner with the innovative technical solutions our customers will expect. Together, we are confident that our partnership with accelerate the migration to electrification.”

About Volta Trucks ‘Truck as a Service’ offer.

With the Volta Zero, Volta Trucks will introduce its innovative Truck as a Service proposition that will revolutionise the financing and servicing of commercial vehicle fleets. Truck as a Service offers fleet managers a frictionless and hassle-free way to electrify their fleet. These operators know they need to migrate to electric commercial vehicles but might be daunted by the prospect. Truck as a Service will help them with every step by offering a single, affordable, monthly fee that provides access to a full-electric Volta Zero, and all its charging infrastructure, servicing, maintenance, financing, insurance, and training requirements.

About the Volta Zero.

The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built full-electric 16-tonne vehicle designed for urban logistics, reducing the environmental impact of freight deliveries in city centres. Designed from the ground up with an operating pure-electric range of 150 – 200 kms (95 – 125 miles), the Volta Zero will eliminate an estimated 1.2M tonnes of CO2 by 2025.

Safety is also at the heart of Volta Trucks, with its ambition of producing the safest trucks for our cities. The Volta Zero was designed for electric from the outset, which facilitates a step-change in vehicle, driver and pedestrian safety. Thanks to the removal of the internal combustion engine, the operator of a Volta Zero sits in a central driving position, with a much lower seat height than a conventional truck. This combination, plus a glass house-style cab design, gives the driver a wide 220-degrees of visibility, minimising dangerous blind spots. The prototype Volta Zero was launched in September 2020, and the first customers started evaluation of prototype vehicles in mid-2022.

In November 2021, Volta Trucks announced Europe’s largest purchase of full-electric trucks with DB Schenker’s order of 1,470 vehicles. This followed Petit Forestier’s order of 1,000 Volta Zeros. Volta Trucks now has a total order bank of around 6,500 vehicles, with an order bank value of circa €1.4 billion.
